World of Warcraft Paladin Guide

Paladins are a hybrid class which means with the correct gear and talent spec they can fulfill the role of

Healing (Holy), Tanking (Protection), and Melee DPS (Retribution)

Both Holy (Healing) and Retribution (Melee DPS) Paladins are suitable for PVP while Protection Paladins are strictly for PVE tanking only

Holy (Healing) Paladin Strength

High Mana Efficiency - Holy Paladins are extremely mana efficient with their healing spell, because with every critical healing spell cast they will regain 60% of the mana cost. Most Holy Paladins gear are also stacked with high spell critical stats which can add up to 25% with talents. Holy Paladins can out mana any healers if their mana is not drained from Hunter, Priest or Warlocks.

Defensive Dispels - Cleanse can dispel up to 3 different effects at the same time, very effective for assisting your arena partners dispelling them from any CC effect except Cyclone.

Blessings - Blessing of Freedom can provide immunity to root and movement slowing abilities and Blessing of Protection can provide immunity to melee attacks, both are extremely powerful if timed correctly

High Armor - Wearing plate armor Paladins have the highest amount of armor in the game for a healing class. They can easily tank a melee while healing themselves.

Divine Shield - This is a Paladin trademark ability, which makes them Invincible allowing them to do anything for 12second unfortunately it is only useable once every 5 minutes.

Anti CC Ability - By using Blessing of Sacrifice a paladin can prevent themselves from being control from many Crowd Control abilities like Polymorph, Blind, Fear , Sap.

Weaknesses

One Spell School - If their spell is interrupted while casting, a paladin can literally do nothing until the effect wears off, this is very frustrating but fortunately by using Concentration aura you can reduce the duration of the effect.

No Crowd Control or Spell Interrupt - A Holy Paladin only have Hammer of Justice as a form of CC but it is on a long cooldown in comparison to Druid which have cyclone to interrupt and Priest that have fear as CC and Shaman have Earth Shock to interrupt spells. This lack of CC makes Paladins one of the worst arena healers in 2v2 or 3v3 , but skillful playing with blessings can make up for this.

No Mana Recovery - Other healing classes have some form of mana recovery while a Holy Paladin don't have anything, Druid have Innervate, Shaman have Mana Tide and Priest have Shadowfiend

 

Retribution (Melee DPS) Paladin Strength

High Melee Burst Damage - With full mana a Retribution Paladin can unload a lot of melee damage in a very short time, even better than Warriors or Rogue because Paladins are not limited by Rage or Energy.

Defensive Dispels - A melee class with defensive dispels are very deadly, making them almost impossible to CC.

15% Run Speed - Only a Paladins and Assasination Rogues in World of Warcraft can run at 15% speed, this give Ret Pallys a 7% speed advantage against other classes.

Weakness

Mana Dependencies (Limited Damage) - Once out of Mana a Paladin can do very little to deal damage, this makes paladins very weak against some mana drain classes

No -Healing Debuff and No Spell Interrupt - Like Feral Druids a Retribution Paladin is another melee character that cant reduce opponents healing and they have no effective spell interrupt this make a paladin very weak at killing healing classes as they can continue to heal without interruption and paladin will eventually run out of mana.

No Movement Slowing Abilities - This is a major weakness for PVP since as a melee damage class you need to stay close to your enemy, and it is extremely difficult to stay in range to kill your target. Paladin only advantage is the slightly faster running speed.
